1. Allah is the only god and Muhammad is his prophet
2. Pray five times daily to Allah facing Mecca
3. Fast during the hours of Ramadan
4. Contribute alms to the poor and sick
5. Make the hajj once in your life, if possible
-Hajj-pilgrimage to Mecca
· Sharia- Islamic law
-Guidance on proper behavior in almost every aspect in life from the Qur’an and early accounts of Muhammad’s life/teaching
-Became more important than his doctrine
· Caliph- “deputy” substitutes for Muhammad
· Sunnis –part that became known as the traditionalist, elect their caliph
· Shaika –people who are descendant form Muhammad are caliph
· Women
-veiling of women became tradition for the upper class
-men and women are equal in the eyes of Allah
-dowiery was given directly to the women
-women are not property, but individuals
-although sharia declared male dominance
· Plato and Aristotle reasoning influenced the Qur’an
